On March 23, 2017, Ray Jack, DPW Director, and Gregg Fraser, Harbormaster, met at the Little Pond channel at low tide to observe the channel and water flow. During the prior week, the tides had been above and below average so it was a good time to review the situation.
The channel was flowing normally according to them. Mr. Jack and Mr. Fraser did not observe any significant obstructions. They were in agreement that the area does not need dredging at this time, however, will meet regularly to keep an eye on the situation. The Harbormaster and DPW Director are currently seeking quotes for possible work at Little Pond and there is no time of year dredging is restricted for Little Pond. Decisions will be made about dredging once the quotes are in based on the available funding.
The water flow in this pond is obviously very important to the Town given that there are millions of oysters growing there annually. Once they receive cost estimates, Mr. Fraser will discuss the issue with Mr. Jack and formulate a plan to move forward.
The FHMNA is committed to monitor this important estuary’s “health” for the overall enjoyment of our community.
