EPS Foam, Styrofoam Recycling Event May 2

The following is the full article quoted from _The Falmouth Enterprise_ published online on 4/12/26 and in the published version on 4/17/26,  page 5,  entitled, “EPS Foam, Styrofoam Recycling Event May 2”.

The Falmouth DPW and Solid Waste Advisory Committee will host a Spring EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) recycling collection on Saturday, May 2, from 9 AM to noon at the DPW parking lot, 416 Gifford Street.

EPS foam—used in packaging, shipping coolers and food containers—takes up lots of space in landfills and never breaks down. It is fully recyclable and can be transformed into surfboards, picture frames, architectural moldings and more.

Last year, Falmouth residents dropped off enough foam to fill two tractor-trailers. The collected foam will be sent to Insulation Technology Inc. in Bridgewater, where it will be compacted and recycled into useful new products.

Acceptable items include: EPS/Styrofoam packaging free of labels, tape or debris; white, unfaced, rigid foam insulation panels; Styrofoam coolers (see important exceptions below); and Styrofoam food trays, egg trays, drink cups and “clamshell” containers. Only white Styrofoam (except for colored food and egg trays) is accepted, and all materials must be clean and dry.

The following items are not acceptable: foil-faced, pink, blue or mineral board types of insulation panels; Styrofoam packing peanuts of any type; coolers or trays that have been used to transport fish products; and bio-coolers that have transported organs, special enzymes or breast milk. Colored Styrofoam is not acceptable, with the exception of food trays. Other unacceptable materials include foam rubber, foam urethane, foam wrapping or bubble wrap.

Packing Peanuts will not be accepted at this recycling event, but they may be taken to Cape Cod Pack and Ship at 850 Main Street. Contact Andrew Armstrong at capecodpackandship@gmail.com with questions.

The Falmouth High School Robotics Team, known as the “Regal Seagulls,” will volunteer to unload participants’ vehicles and pack the foam into large bags for transport. Voluntary contributions to Falmouth Public Schools Robotics Program will be accepted at the event and may be made in cash or by check made payable to Falmouth High School with RS-Robotics in the memo line.

The event is rain or shine, but will be postponed in the event of a major storm. A list of accepted items, a printable event flyer and additional information are posted at falmouthma.gov/1504/EPS-Foam-Recycling.
