As many members have noticed, after even a moderate rainfall, the flooding on Menauhant Road in the vicinity of Bristol Beach seems to be worse than ever this year. The flooding has been so bad that westbound cars were forced into the eastbound lane just to avoid the unknown deepest part of the ponds that had formed in two places creating a potentially very dangerous head-on situation.
This flooding has been on our radar screen for some time and DPW has previously temporarily addressed the problem by clearing drainage ditches allowing water to drain from the roadway. Unfortunately, these drainage ditches soon became significantly silted-in causing the flooding we are now experiencing.
There is however “Good News”: we are pleased to advise after several emails and complaints from neighbors and FHMNA, the Falmouth DPW has agreed, after consulting with the Conservation Commission, to address this issue once again.
A permanent solution to this problem is not an easy one due to the level of the road and the high water table in the immediate area. As we understand it, DPW will dig out the area adjacent to these flood zones and lay in gravel (or larger stones) allowing for the drain water to have a place to go. As mentioned, this is far from a long-term permanent solution, but hopefully will relieve the current situation for some time.
Further “Good News”: it appears work on this project has commenced TODAY, Wednesday 5/19/21, and after a drive-by the work appeared to be complete.
